India closes main border with Pakistan after Kashmir attack

India has implemented a series of measures against Pakistan following a tragic attack in Indian-administered Kashmir that resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals.

These actions include the closure of the primary border crossing between the two nations, the suspension of a water-sharing agreement, and the expulsion of Pakistani diplomats.

 

A prolonged insurgency has persisted in the predominantly Muslim region for decades, prompting a fierce reaction from the Indian government following a recent attack.

India has indicated that it holds Pakistan indirectly accountable, with security agencies suspecting the involvement of a group known as the Kashmir Resistance, although this claim has not been independently verified by BBC News.

A manhunt for the assailants was ongoing as of Wednesday evening, while Pakistan’s National Security Council is set to convene on Thursday.

In response to the attack in Pahalgam, the Pakistani foreign ministry expressed concern over the loss of tourist lives and extended condolences.

India has long accused Pakistan of backing militant groups in the region, a claim that Islamabad vehemently denies.

Following the attack, India announced immediate expulsion of Pakistani military advisers from its embassy in Delhi, with further diplomatic actions anticipated next week.

The incident threatens to escalate tensions between the two nuclear-armed nations, with the Indian government vowing to bring the attackers and their sponsors to justice.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized that India’s response would extend beyond the immediate perpetrators to those orchestrating such acts from behind the scenes.

The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from international leaders and has sparked outrage and mourning across India, with eyewitnesses recounting chaotic scenes as families fled for safety, suggesting that the gunmen may have specifically targeted non-Muslims.

New Delhi: In response to the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam that resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals, the Indian government announced significant measures on Wednesday. The Centre declared that Pakistani nationals will be prohibited from entering India under the SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) Visa Exemption Scheme.Additionally, any Pakistanis currently in India on such visas must exit the country within 48 hours.

Following a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Foreign Secretary Vikam Misri reported that the committee was informed about the attack and its “cross-border linkages.” This incident occurred after the successful completion of Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir and amidst the region’s ongoing economic development. read more
