Nearly 10,000 federal employees have been terminated as Donald Trump and Elon Musk intensify their efforts against U.S. agencies
Over 9,500 federal employees were dismissed as part of an initiative spearheaded by President Trump and advisor Elon Musk aimed at streamlining government operations.
Over 9,500 employees responsible for various functions, including the management of federal lands and care for military veterans, were terminated on Friday as part of a significant effort by US President Donald Trump and his advisor Elon Musk to drastically reduce bureaucracy in the United States.
The ongoing employee termination initiative has primarily affected personnel within the Departments of Interior, Energy, Veteran Affairs, Agriculture, and Health and Human Services. Many of those impacted are probationary employees in their initial year of service, who possess limited employment protections.
Certain agencies have effectively ceased operations, notably the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, an independent oversight body, which has also seen reductions impacting fixed-term contract employees. Concurrently, the Internal Revenue Service is reportedly planning to terminate thousands of positions next week, as per Reuters, referencing two sources with knowledge of the situation. This action may be aimed at conserving resources in anticipation of the April 15 deadline for U.S. citizens to submit their income tax returns.
