New Delhi:

The recent appointment of Rekha Gupta as Delhi’s Chief Minister has sparked discussions surrounding her past social media activity, particularly her critical remarks aimed at former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Since her confirmation for the position on Wednesday evening, both her supporters and detractors have highlighted these old posts. Gupta’s backers, including those from the BJP, have utilized her previous comments to ridicule Kejriwal following his defeat in the recent elections, which ended a decade of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) governance.

Conversely, AAP supporters have criticized Gupta for her choice of language in these posts, labeling it as inappropriate. BJP advocates assert that her earlier statements reflect her unwavering stance as a vocal opponent of Kejriwal and the AAP administration, employing various memes to underscore her critiques.

Trinamool Congress MP Sagarika Ghose was among the Opposition figures who commented on Ms. Gupta’s previous tweets. She expressed concern over reports circulating on social media regarding Delhi’s new Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, highlighting her past use of abusive language and rowdy behavior.

Ghose contrasted Gupta with the diligent Sheila Dixit and the eloquent Sushma Swaraj, asserting that the current BJP has normalized such vitriol. In response, X user Nyaksha defended the language used by Gupta, suggesting it was appropriate against corrupt officials and more effective than the dismissive remarks made by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee about her former colleagues who joined the BJP.

The BJP’s recent return to power in Delhi, after a 26-year absence, marks a significant shift, as they aim to implement key election promises, maintain welfare initiatives from the previous AAP administration, and address pressing issues like pollution and infrastructure, while also focusing on cleaning the River Yamuna.

The BJP secured 48 out of 70 assembly seats, effectively ending the AAP’s decade-long dominance, which saw them win only 22 seats, a notable decline from their previous standing.
