A significant earthquake in Tibet has resulted in 53 fatalities, with tremors also experienced in various regions of India.
New Delhi:A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Tibet near the Nepalese border today, resulting in the deaths of fifty-three individuals, as reported by news agency AFP citing Chinese media Xinhua. The tremors were felt across various regions in India, including Bihar, Assam, and West Bengal.
As of Tuesday noon, the Chinese state-owned Xinhua news agency, as reported by AFP, confirmed fifty-three fatalities and sixty-two injuries following a 6.8-magnitude earthquake that affected Dingri County in Xigaze, Xizang (Tibet) Autonomous Region at 9:05 am. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) recorded the initial earthquake at 6:35 am, with two additional quakes occurring shortly thereafter.
A second earthquake measuring 4.7 in magnitude occurred at 7:02 am, followed by a third earthquake of 4.9 magnitude at 7:07 am, with respective depths of 10 km and 30 km. Nepal is situated in a seismically active zone due to the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, which has led to the formation of the Himalayas and frequent seismic activity. The devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake in 2015 resulted in nearly 9,000 fatalities and over 22,000 injuries, along with the destruction of more than half a million homes.
The tremors were notably felt in Bihar, prompting residents to evacuate their homes and apartments. Fortunately, there have been no reports of property damage resulting from the earthquake. more..
